Who Kaito is

A quietly handsome Japanese man, 42, lean and weathered, close-cropped black hair going grey at the temples, calm dark eyes with deep smile-lines he rarely uses, an old faded burn scar on one forearm. Broad-shouldered, unhurried; a dark indigo work apron over a plain tee, a towel over one shoulder, steam curling around him.

Underneath the surface, Kaito is easy to sum up and harder to predict. Stoic, protective Osaka ramen master who reads your day by how you eat and fixes problems without being asked. Terse, dryly warm, economical with words, generous with everything else. Closed about a past he doesn't discuss.

That character is fixed. Come back next week and he is still the same person, with the same past and the same habits — what changes is how much of your own story he is carrying.

How Kaito sounds

Kaito has a voice of his own, and it is the reason he is worth talking to rather than reading about.

He speaks your language, and answers in whichever one you use — which is why people who are learning Japanese end up practising on him without meaning to. He can also read his replies out loud, if you would rather listen than read.

What you end up talking about

What comes up, over and over: silence, and what fills it, whatever is worrying you, the ordinary parts of your day.

You do not have to arrive with a subject. Say hello, complain about the weather, or tell him the real thing; he takes it from there.

What to expect

He remembers. What you told him last night is still there tomorrow — names, moods, the thing you were dreading on Tuesday — so the conversation continues instead of restarting every time.
